AS OF FEBRUARY 2012 WILL NO LONGER BE POSTING SUNDAY, MONDAY OR FRIDAYS UNLESS FOR A BLOG TOUR, GIVEAWAY HOP OR AUTHOR GUEST POST THAT I DO NOT HAVE TO MONITOR COMMENTS FOR.

As of January 2012 will not be taking any more new book review requests until later in May of 2012. My on again off again Kindle access is becoming a problem with reading my ebooks by the date I have them contracted for finishing and setting up the review posts.

Thank you for considering me but will be happy to do author/book promo posts with openings starting in February of 2012. I will be happy to help anyone who writes in the genres that I enjoy reading and those include Historical or Contemporary Romance, Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, Mystery Suspense Thrillers or Young Adult and any combination of these genres in one book.

Also looking ahead to my blogoversary celebration in April which will be a month of weekly giveaway posts that will all be international entry allowed. So stick around!

AUTHOR MICHELLE MCCLEOD INTERVIEW-GUEST POST/GIVEAWAY

At the end of the post there will be an international giveaway for 3 E-Copies of Love Potions.
Photo and bio courtesy of author
Michelle's Bio
Michelle McCleod saw her first ghost at the age of 4 and has been running scared ever since. She also stole a rock from a real vampire who is probably still looking for her. On top of that, any psychic tendencies she has are dyslexic. Basically, the safest thing for her to do is stay indoors and write what she knows:Paranormal. Readers can find her online on her blog site
Pull up a chair and stay awhile, enjoy the interview and good luck with the ebook giveaway!

Jackie

How did you research this book/novella?
Michelle
I didn't. Which is probably why I had so much difficulty writing it! I made it up as I went along and had tons of conflicting threads that took hours to fix. I don't recommend this method!
Jackie
In the beginning, what or who spoke to your first? The story or the characters?
Michelle
Neither! I just had this 'what if a witch's love potions exploded' question and built on it from there. A lot of my work focuses on the theme of magic not saving the day. Love Potions is about an incompetent witch who thinks she needs more magic to save herself, when really all she needs is her humanity.
Jackie
Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?
Michelle
If I didn't have a toddler, I probably would. The routine with a small child underfoot is to be ready to seize any moment that presents itself for writing. Not to mention lots of late nights!
Actually, right now, I'm editing more than writing, which is a different work load. Since I don't have to hit a set word count, it's a little easier. When I finally get my next novel, Crime Bites, launched I'll have to go back to meeting word count quotas on new work.
Jackie
If someone who was not a reader asked you to recommend a book to get them hooked what would you pick?
Michelle
Oh wow. This is a hard question!

For kids, I love John Belairs and his work is being lost to time, which is a shame as his YA horror is amazing.

David Eddings, Mercedes Lackey and Marion Zimmer Bradley are the authors I cut my reading teeth on, so I would probably suggest something from their body of work.
Thanks so much for your insightful answers Michelle, you not only clued us in to the book process, you also gave some pointers on authors new as well as old to me that maybe I should get cracking some pages open with!

Devils' Den (Adventures of Justin McKnight)Devils' Den by Leonard D. Hilley II

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis

Evil has resurrected in the quaint, rural community of Cider Knoll, Kentucky. The day after a country pastor is ritualistically murdered, a teenage boy vanishes inside an enchanted cave—Devil’s Den—that has long been rumored to be haunted. The local sheriff is baffled on how to continue the search and rescue when the only clues end at a mysterious wall inside the cave. Then an unexpected man shows up with an age-worn book that has disturbing revelations about identical phenomena that have occurred every twenty years for the past one hundred forty years. And according to the predictions set inside the book, they have little time to find the boy before he becomes the next victim.
My Thoughts

Authors have to walk a fine line when they switch from writing stories themed for adult readers to stories that are geared towards a young adult audience. The level of detail has to appeal to a wider range audience than the target age group while at the same time it cannot be too involved or it will end up discouraging younger readers. In "Devil's Den" we have a bit of horror, mystery suspense and dark paranormal elements that all tie together nicely and lead the reader through the adventures and mishaps experienced by young Justin McKnight at a steady pace that builds anticipation of what comes next without either overwhelming them or causing confusion on what has already happened as in some cases when there are multiple plot lines. Without giving much away I will tell you that if you like zombies, dark magic/voodoo practicioners, alternate realities and necromancers and you are willing to suspend disbelief while reading than this will be a very enjoyable experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat while you try and find out what happens to Justin!

Having read and enjoyed the previous adult series written by the author it was a pleasure for me to have a chance to see what he had in store for a different audience and it was no surprise to find that it carried over to adult reading as well even though targeting younger readers.

For those of you who have not heard of or read anything by Leonard Hilley you are in for a good page turning time!

Diamonds and Toads: A Modern Fairy TaleDiamonds and Toads: A Modern Fairy Tale by K.E. Saxon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Synopsis

Once upon a time, there were two sisters, one blessed, and one cursed by fairy magic....

So each sister's story begins.

Delilah Perrault is blessed with riches beyond her wildest dreams and the man she's had her eye on for ages--even though he secretly has designs on her newfound wealth instead. Delilah's half-sister, Isadora, is cursed with having her every utterance come out as an obscene and humiliating quip, just when the gorgeous hunk she dumped years before under pressure from mama swaggers back into her life.

If you like Bewitched, Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, try out this modern girl's fairy tale.

My Thoughts

Most everyone I know has either had a fairy tale read to them as a child or read them on their own. I am going to warn you now this is not Goldilocks and the three bears! Author K.E. Saxon took what sounded like a fairly straightforward story of two stepsisters and their wretchedly mean mother and turned it on it's ear by creating a very sexy and very entertaining erotic romance that is made up of two parts.

Delilah's story is first and when you find out her "dirty little secret" hidden beneath a prim and proper exterior you will do the same thing the rest of us did, laugh long and loud and keep reading in sheer delight!

The lovely and oh so tied-to-Mommy's apron strings stepsister, Isadora, is another kettle of fish altogether. Thoroughly jaded and self-centered to a fault she nonetheless tugs at ones heart when she is cursed by the same eccentrically nutty fairy godmotherwho made her sister's every dream come true!
Two young women, two different romantic entanglements and a whole lot of dizzying twists and turns later you will be one satisfied reader when they each get their own particular HEA. Nice remake of an "innocent" bedtime story that you will want to reread more than once.

[This enchantingly sexy read was won by me in a blog giveaway and sent to me by the author. My thoughts and opinions on the story are honestly my own and in no way influenced by the author or anyone else.]

DODIE KATAGUE GUEST POST/INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY

Please sit back and enjoy this one folks, it has been a real joy for me to participate in this tour and to read the author's memoir "Cloyne Court". I think that it was probably one of the more unique books that have had in my hands in a very long while,  it played out like a soap opera but with a personal feel as it happened to be a true story. Enjoy the guest post about Dodie's very interesting college experience and stick around for the author's giveaway at the end.
Dodie has written some sage advice for those in college today, not only that but if you read the entire post he has shown a way of life that for any young person may sound like sheer heaven but remember things are not always what they seem!
Cloyne Court was a really fun reading experience but can tell you this it is also an eye opener at how very naive and at the same time how very liberal American campuses used to be back in the 70's and early 80's compared to now.
College life at Cloyne Court:

My college days were very unique. During the late 1970’s, while attending the University of California, Berkeley, I lived one block north of the campus in a student-run, private cooperative called Cloyne Court. When I first moved in, I was glad that I turned down my parent’s offer to accompany me. Had they seen the place back then, they would have been opposed to me moving into the house. Any parent would have.
The “Clones”(as we called ourselves) who lived there were required to do a five-hour weekly work shift to keep the place running and maintained, and other students supervised that requirement. As a result, the place was a pigsty.
There were empty beer bottles strewn around the main public rooms.  Old newspapers were piled five high under a faded handwritten sign that said “Recycling”, but hadn’t been “cycled” in ages. There were dozens of marijuana plants growing in pails on a porch balcony in the back yard. The windows were opaque with dust and grime and the carpets were stained with grey spots. The walls were painted with eclectic murals and spray painted graffiti with slogans like “THERE IS NO GRAVITY. THE EARTH SUCKS.” The toilet seat in the bathroom was painted as a shark’s open mouth with the sharp teeth about to swallow the sitter. The place also had a musty old smell, with intermittent wafts of reefer smoke coming from somewhere upstairs.
The students ran the place, voted on policies by consensus at the weekly meetings, and allocated our discretionary housing fees with political earnest but total disregard to the business side of feeding and maintaining a house of 151 people. Should we buy food this month or restock the vending machines with doobies? Should we fix the locks on the front door to keep the homeless out or should we buy a ten-person hot tub and sauna?
Because I was a freshman both to college and adult life, I did not question the way things were. I didn’t question the dozen or so marijuana plants growing in pails on the backyard balcony porch. I didn’t question the co-ed shower room where men and women showered side by side in a communal space. I thought this was part of the regular college experience. I was at Berkeley, and everything was tolerated to excess.
Many college campuses around the country were known for their crazy naked streaking events. But our house pushed it to the limit. We had political nudists who were naked all the time, including at meals. They advocated going to class in the buff and some even did so.  We also had the annual springtime Naked Hallway Races, which is an event that still exists today.
I knew that what I where I was living and what I was experiencing was out of the ordinary even for other Berkeley students who lived at the dorms, apartments or fraternities/sororities.  So I kept a journal of the daily mundane things I did and the absolutely insane things that happened. And many of those stories are the basis for the novel.
Since the publication of the book, I’ve gotten emails from past Clones who have lived there and everyone has a raucous memory or two to tell.  And lots of Clones remember when a new unknown band called Sweet Children (now known as Green Day) played a set in the dining room as an opening act for other punk rock bands. The police arrived and shut the party down.
Right after the book was published, I was in a parental dilemma. After writing a novel about sex, betrayal, drugs, rock and roll, nudism, co-ed showers, and radical politics, how was I going to have any credibility with my teen-age children when I needed to tell them not to do these things when they went to college?
I couldn’t tell them not too, because they knew I did. So the best I could counsel was “Don’t do anything that will get you arrested. Stay safe. Do things in moderation. And remember, you’re at school to study and get a degree.”
We’ll see if that advice does any good.
I hope that current college students as well as Baby Boomers will read this, but not as a “how-to” manual of college debauchery, but as a reminder that they should enjoy their college lives now, but not to the point that they’ll be embarrassed to read about themselves thirty years later. Thank God, we didn’t have YouTube back then. It’s easier to deny written stories of your wild college years than seeing real video of it.

Thanks so much for visiting today Dodie, glad that you survived Cloyne Court and even happier that you had such a unique experience growing up and it turned out to be one that you actually learned some things from that were useful in later life. Circumspection being one of them from the sound of it!
Hope everyone else enjoyed a bit of the background of college life "Then" as compared to "Now", I know I did.

Book Synopsis

In 1946, the "real" all male "Animal House" was born when Cloyne Court become a student co-op. But the real story begins when Cloyne Court went co-ed in 1972 with the arrival of sixty-two women. Katague's sexy, reveal-all memoir takes place in the late 70s, soon after the women moved in. All it takes is one kiss to transform animals into horny princes.
My Thoughts
Cloyne Court is one of those books you lose yourself inside as you read through it. Easy conversational style memoir about people who lived in each others pockets for 4 years while going to college at UC Berkley. The place where parties were larger than life, relationships were made and broken, rumors and tall tales abounded and most of all where young Derek learned that books cannot beat the experience of living day to day amidst a diverse group of individuals.

This is a truly interesting tale. It has some very likable as well as some obnoxious characters, the antics that the students pull are not as wild as some people would think but instead have a flavor of innocence and naivete that is missing in the youth of today. Late 70's to early 80's is a time lots of us remember with nostalgia, some years more vividly than others.

For anyone looking for a story that has a lot of different characters whose lives intertwine and whose youthful shenanigans are entertaining and heartwarming than this is the read for you.

The author Dodie Katague has created a novel which showcases youth in America in a way that is both funny and at times poignantly heartbreaking. A truly excellent read!
