At the end of CITY OF BONES Harry Bosch quit the LAPD, but he's back in a new role, one that will give him more freedom to pursue the cases that compel him. When he left the LAPD Bosch took a file with him: the case of a film production assistant murdered four years earlier during a $2 million robbery on a movie set. The LAPD, now operating under post 9/11 rules, think the stolen money was used to finance a terrorist training camp. Thoughts of the original murder victim were lost in the federal zeal, and when Bosch decides to re-investigate, he quickly falls fouls of both his old colleagues and the FBI. But it's not just the case which is keeping Bosch awake at night. When the investigation enables him to meet up with an old friend, shadows from his past come back to haunt him...
My nod to reading my 4th favorite genre is to dive back into the world of Harry Bosch, retired police detective. I enjoyed this Murder Mystery Thriller as a change of pace but will not make reading them a steady diet as they are "thinking book reads" and I prefer to read for relaxation and entertainment. Harry Bosch is a good character to follow, very human and also very personable. The "cold case" that draws Harry out of his "retirement" and into the world of a 4 year old murder was one he had worked at the beginning before it was given to other detectives on the force. In a world of cynicism this one man decides that he is going to "stand" for the victim and not let her death go unavenged. The young woman was never forgotten by Harry and when he is asked to look into this old case he does so with a tenaciousness that soon causes him to become embroiled in a cat and mouse game with not only the FBI and his former associates but renews acquaintances with his former partners on the force. The book has all the suspense and thrills you can ask for that Michael Connelly has made into a fine art. We are given vivid insight into not only Harry's personal world but his very clever and artful investigative techniques. The surprise twist ending this story will make you go back in your mind and see if the "clues" provided would have solved the case for you as well. I would say for anyone who likes this genre and has not read any of the series that this book would be a good place to start.
