At the end of Ravenous, the first Dark Forgotten book, the fate of police detective Conall Macmillan was unknown. For a secondary character, he’d managed to get into a lot of trouble. To wrap up his plot thread in the last few chapters wouldn’t have done his story justice, so Scorched is all about what happened next.
I’m so happy I had the opportunity to write this book. This is the story of an ordinary man who makes a mistake and ends up paying with his soul. After his run-in with a demon, Mac’s become an outcast, shunned by everybody he once knew. But, he still likes watching sports, cracking wise and having a beer. He misses his friends and, most of all, his job at the precinct. He desperately wants his old life back.
Mac is one of the good guys, a smart cop used to fighting for justice. His impulse to help other people leads him to a monster-filled prison called the Castle, and Mac has to kick more than a few scaly backsides to survive.
Things start to look up when he takes a case from the beautiful vampire, Constance—but that brings other questions to the forefront. As Mac becomes more deeply involved in the mystery of her son’s kidnapping, his last scraps of humanity begin to fade. A solution will cost him any chance of resuming his old life. Helping others is what defines him, so which is worse: being a monster in fact, or losing himself by playing it safe?
Scorched is a story about people and how their feelings change destiny—so what if they have fangs or bat wings? Mac being Mac, he faces some pretty big questions head-on. What makes someone a monster? What sacrifice is too large to redeem a world broken by selfishness? And, how much redeeming does it take to make an outcast like him a hero again?
The heroine, Constance, has her own difficult questions to face. And so do you! Here are a few to get the discussion rolling:
1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?
2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?
3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?
